How does a plate heat exchanger work?

Hot and cold fluids flow in alternating channels formed by thin, corrugated stainless steel (or titanium) plates. The plates create high turbulence and a very large surface area in a small footprint, transferring heat across the plate wall with no mixing of the two fluids.

How do I clean a plate heat exchanger?

For gasketed units, isolate, drain and open the frame, then CIP-clean the plate pack with a mild acid (for scale) or alkaline (for biofilm) at 60 °C. Brazed plate units are flushed in-place with descaler. Pair with a side stream filtration unit upstream to extend cleaning intervals.

Why is my plate heat exchanger blocked or losing performance?

The most common causes are scale on the hot side, magnetite fouling on the heating side, or biological growth on cooling duties. Falling secondary flow or rising approach temperature are early warning signs — a CIP service or plate replacement restores performance.

What is the difference between brazed and gasketed plate heat exchangers?

Brazed plate units are compact, copper- or nickel-brazed and non-serviceable — ideal for sealed duties up to ~30 bar. Gasketed units can be opened, expanded and re-gasketed for cleaning and capacity changes — preferred for district heating, DHW and industrial process duties.
