What does an air and dirt separator do?

It removes microbubbles of dissolved air and ferrous/non-ferrous particulate from a closed heating or chilled water system. The coalescing media inside captures micro-bubbles that float to the auto-vent, while particles drop into the dirt chamber for periodic flushing.

Where should an air and dirt separator be installed?

Install at the point of lowest pressure and highest temperature — typically on the flow side, immediately downstream of the boiler or chiller. Vertical installation is preferred for full coalescing efficiency.

Do I need a magnetic air and dirt separator?

If your system contains cast-iron heat exchangers, steel pipework or has shown signs of magnetite (black sludge), specify the magnetic variant. The neodymium magnet captures iron oxide before it reaches pumps, control valves and heat exchanger plates.

How often should an air and dirt separator be serviced?

Flush the dirt chamber quarterly for the first year, then biannually once the system is clean. Check the auto-vent annually and inspect the coalescing media at major shutdowns. Pair with a side stream filtration unit for continuous magnetite removal.
